Remember your first day of school?

Nyack native Fred Clay Jr., who celebrates his 30th high school reunion this year, remembers his first day of junior high vividly. Sitting on a retaining wall near the bus lineup at Nyack Middle School, where he went as a child and where his son now attends sixth grade, he recalled how nervous he was.
He had attended a school that drew from mostly black neighborhoods, and at the middle school he met up with students who attended schools from mostly white neighborhoods. That first day, the two groups just stood and stared at one another, unsure what to expect, he said. Yet by the end of the year, “all in all, we made out to be very good friends and that continued in the high school years,” he said.
