Keeping an eye on education

That’s a lot to learn

August

I watched “The Ron Clark Story” last night.

UPDATE: Read a review by a real teacher “here.”:http://drhomeslice.blogspot.com/2006/08/ron-clark-story-teachers-review.html

What is it about tales of inspiring teachers? The list is long, long – they’re always popular, meaningful, emotional. I can still sing all the lyrics to “To Sir with Love.”

Interesting that Clark is no longer teaching in public schools (the film depicts his 1999 Harlem classroom experience).

He has set up a “private middle school in Atlanta”:http://www.ronclark.info/ron_clark_academy/index.asp for poor kids in fifth through eighth grade. Its curriculum is full of field trips, including an international trip every year.

The “Thornton-Donovan School”:http://www.td.edu here in New Rochelle does something similar. Its curriculum each year has a theme that infuses every subject and culminates in a big trip taken by the whole school. The year they studied Spain, for example, students read Don Quixote, learned to play Spanish guitar, studied the science behind the country’s windmill energy projects and much more.
